What Caselist can and can’t access
Caselist is a Chrome extension for debaters. The Mailer posts your speech documents to openCaselist. The Searcher looks up what other teams have posted. This page is the short version of the privacy policy.
It talks to two places only
- Gmail, to read your email.
- openCaselist, to look things up and to post your rounds.
There is no Caselist server. The developer cannot see your email or what you do. Nothing about how you use it is counted or recorded.
Your Gmail
Caselist asks for permission to read your email, and nothing else. It cannot send, delete or change email.
It looks for:
- the email conversations where you or your partner send speech documents
- the emails Tabroom sends telling you who you debate next
- whether the partner address you typed has sent any email (a yes-or-no check)
In those conversations:
- It reads the text of emails from you and your partner only.
- For everyone else, it reads the From, To and Cc lines. That means it sees the names and addresses of people copied, such as opponents and judges. It uses them to guess who the judge was. They are not saved on your computer.
- It downloads a file attached to an email only when you pick it and press Publish.
What is sent to openCaselist
- When you press Publish: the file you chose and the round details shown on the form, including the judge’s name if you keep the one it suggests. They go on your team’s openCaselist page, which other openCaselist users can see.
- When you look up a team: the name of that team. Autosearch finds your next opponent in your Tabroom email, then asks openCaselist for that team’s page. openCaselist can see which teams you look up, the same as if you browsed the site.
- When you press Scan caselist: it downloads the list of every school and team on your caselist.
No other part of your email leaves your computer. Caselist uses the openCaselist account you are already signed in to and never sees your password.
What is saved on your computer
- your setup choices
- your partner’s email address and your own
- a copy of the school and team names from openCaselist, including debaters’ names, so searching is quick
- a record of the last 200 files you published: Gmail’s ID numbers for the email and the file, not their contents
No email text, subject lines or files are saved. Everything saved stays in this browser, and removing the extension deletes all of it. A round you have published can be edited or removed on openCaselist itself.
Check it yourself
- In Chrome, open chrome://extensions, find Caselist and click Details. It can reach three sites: gmail.googleapis.com, opencaselist.com and api.opencaselist.com.
- You can remove its Gmail access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
- When you sign in, Google shows a warning that it has not verified this app. Google’s review of the extension is not finished yet.
